Post-Operative Care For Fractures

  • Patients who have had any form of sedation should not operate a motor vehicle the day of surgery.
  • Good mouth care is essential. Rinse mouth beginning the day of surgery and continue to brush teeth carefully. Gently rinse mouth with a lukewarm salt-water solution (made by dissolving ½ teaspoon of table salt in an 8 oz. glass of warm water). Rinse three to four times per day until advised by the doctor to discontinue. A water pik may be used as a supplemental aid to rinse away excess debris. Set the water pik on low and keep the water flow directed at the teeth.
  • Take all medications as this office has prescribed them. If a prescription for pain is written, do not operate a motor vehicle while taking this medication.
  • Swelling is common after oral surgery and will gradually decrease over the first few weeks.
  • Discoloration of the face (bruising) may occur following surgery. This should not cause concern.
  • Diet: Although three cans of Ensure™ per day will provide adequate nourishment, we suggest these be used as extra nourishment for between meal snacks and in addition to the regular diet. We suggest using a turkey baster filled with the Ensure™ to expel it into the mouth.
  • Talking: Limit talking. Use a note pad or magic slate for the first several days.
  • Wire Cutters: Carry them at all times while wired together. The wire cutters are to be used only in an emergency. If something gets stuck in your throat and it cannot be cleared, then the wires should be cut. Please remember everything you drink is liquid; do not be afraid if you have to vomit, just lean forward, and let it drain out of your mouth. If the wires break or are cut, call our office immediately.
  • If there is concern about any event following surgery, please call the office promptly. Problems following surgery are best managed during regular office hours. If you have a problem that cannot wait until regular office hours, you may call our doctors at 704.291.7333 or 1.866.321.7333 and wait for further instructions.
  • Please remember that prescription refills can be given only during regular office hours. Monday through Thursday 8:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. and Friday 8:30 a.m. until 12:00 noon.
